Linda Lu

Sharpe, 1960.  Recorded: 06-10-60

Johnny Kidd (vocals) - Alan Caddy (rthm) - Brian Gregg (bass) - Clem Catinni (drums)

There were not too many records released by UK artists in the very early 1960's rooted in R'n'B and destined (hopefully) for the 'Hit Parade' as it was then known.  Not only that, but when "Linda Lu" was released the group were travelling upwards of 1,000 miles to promote it.  The disc was played on the BBC TV's "Juke Box Jury" while the lads remained hidden to the panel behind a screen.  Adventurous as the song was the audience (who could see them) appreciated the lads' grins and grimaces when the panel voted it a "miss".  Sadly, it was right and had far-reaching effects; with a miserly one week in the Top Fifty at 47 it became Kidd's last chart entry for two years and would - after one more unsuccessful release - precipitate a "mutiny".
