With
the amount of rain with received recently, there was a slight air of
inevitability about this week's fixture against Chertsey Rec. Once
again, Norman Fostecute had worked hard on the pitch only to have to
admit defeat at the hands of the weather. I had received a phone call
from Cap'n beefy mid-Friday afternoon telling me Norman had strongly
advised not playing at home this week. With all the rain that had
fallen and was likely to fall over the weekend, he was concerned that
should be gained go-ahead the pitch would suffer quite bad.
My
brief was to try and switch the fixture to their ground. Their captain
was unavailable, indeed he comes all the way down from Birmingham to
play on both Saturdays and Sundays, which means he is listed number
went unanswered. A trawl through old fixture cards revealed Malcolm
Wades' number, he would try to get hold of the council who look after
their pitch to see if something could be arranged. It was an hour
before I heard anything back, and as feared, or may be to my relief
bearing in mind the forecast, it was too late. A quick call to Beefy
and it was decided to call it off, even a ring around clubs on my
short fixture list wasn't worth trying.
Chertsey Rec are on my short list to telephone should we get a
cancellation later in the year. Otherwise we won't be able to indulge
in this ''needle '' game until 2004, which is a shame, they are always
a challenge and we like to do well.
