Neil Cooper, who had been part of the backbone
of the side for some years suffered a debilitating injury when his Achilles heel
snapped during a bowling spell at a home game. It took many months to Neil to
recover but he preferred not to risk it again for West End. We still had the
services of Jeremy Wing, a genuine quickie bowler, plus Larry Spencer, Adie
Lamberth, Mike Marsden plus two pairs of brothers, the Barretts and Thompsons.
Windlesham appears on our fixture cards this
season, part of our policy to keep up the number of local teams into our fixture
cards as possible. Others that would be targeted in future years included our
neighbours Bisley, Lightwater, Pirbright, Knaphill, Brookwood and St. Johns.
1989 was the last of a few years where there
were two definite 'camps' in the club, separated by the respective age gap. The
"Elder Statesmen" which included Captain Steve Hardy, Dave Evans, Mike Marsden,
Robbie Phillips and Neil Cooper virtually retired from active service as one,
which meant a re-alignment of the team somewhat.
